Why is calibration a must?

Calibration involves determining the values that a measuring instrument displays when it is exposed to a precisely defined stimulus. To achieve measurement results that can be universally compared, instruments must be traceable to a national standard. This traceability is upheld by a calibration hierarchy. Therefore, anyone seeking accurate and comparable measurements should have their measuring instruments calibrated at regular intervals by an accredited calibration laboratory or perform the calibration themselves using a traceable calibration system.
